“She gives us an athleticism on the wing position that we’ve been missing,” Sun coach Curt Miller said.
“She really impacted us in that first half in Dallas and really provided us a spark not only getting to the basket but made a 3 but her rebounds per minute played were terrific in that game from the guard position.
No other Connecticut player was on the court more from the second quarter on in the 93-89 victory than the former South Florida star.
Williams played all but three seconds in the fourth quarter and was often entrusted with running the team in the final quarter and in overtime to help the Sun win back-to-back games for the first time this season.
Courtney Williams heard plenty of chatter from both her former and current coaches about how the move from Phoenix to Connecticut would give her a chance to display her world-class athleticism.
However, it wasn’t until the Connecticut Sun’s improbable come-from-behind overtime win against reigning WNBA champion Minnesota on Thursday when it became evident that after being an afterthought on the veteran Mercury squad, Williams is a building block for a young Sun squad.
The Sun regretted not being able to land Williams on draft day when the team picked up Morgan Tuck, Banham and Jonquel Jones with three of the top six picks.
With a few extra days before the next game, Williams was able to get up to speed with the system run by the Sun.Williams is excited to be back in Connecticut but more importantly to be playing a meaningful role again.“Anybody who gets drafted wants to make an impact and not to sit on the bench,” Williams said.“The first thing the coaches told me is you are familiar with this place (Mohegan Sun Arena, the site of the American Athletic Conference tournament), and the fans love you out here so I was excited,” Williams said.“I think it going to help all of us grow on this team.
